A calendar is a system of measuring and recording the
passage of time It orders time into years, seasons,
months, weeks and days The ancient Hebrew Calendar began
with the Creation, where YHWH (Hebrew name for the LORD)
provided the sun, the moon, and the stars for measuring
times and seasons (Genesis 114-19). Time as reckoned
based on a lunar Calendar and was known as the Hebrew
Sacred Calendar.
Since the first man, Adam, time has been measured in
terms of years. Adam was "a hundred and thirty
years" of age when he became father to Seth (Gen
5:3). Monthly divisions are also used early on in the
book of Genesis. By the time of the flood, during Noah's
time we find time divided into months of 30 days, since
a period of 5 months was shown j to equal 150 days (Gen.7:11,
24; 8.3-4) That same. record also indicated that Noah
divided the Year into 12 months (Gen.8.1-14). |

The Jewish month runs
from New Moon to New Moon (Isa. 66.23). The Hebrew word "chodhesh"
"month" comes from a root meaning "new"
while another word for month, "ye "rach" means
" lunation" YHWH commanded the Israelites to celebrate
the beginning of each new month with a great festival (Numbers
10.10, lsa. 66:23; Ez. 46:1).
A week was a period of seven days according to the book of
Genesis (Gen. 1.1.2; 2). God rested from his creative works
on the seventh day (Gen.2.3). In Exodus 20:8-1 I, YHWH commanded
the Israelites to observe the Sabbath (7th) day forever, in
all their dwellings, throughout all their generations. This
law was also in effect for the foreigners that dwelled among
them. The biblical day totals a period of 24 hours which begins
at the setting of the sun (evening) and ends at the following
sunset " And the evening and the morning were the first
day. .." (Gen. 1.5, 8, 13, 19,23, 31; Lev. 23: 32).
In the Bible, the individual months are usually designated
by numbering according to their position in the year, from
the 1st through the 12th,
(Joshua 4: 19; Numbers 9: II; 2 Chronicles 15: 10; Jeremiah
52:6; Numbers 33:38; EzekieI8:1; Leviticus 16:29; I Kings
12:32; Ezra 10:9).
In the book of Exodus, YHWH decreed that the first month be
called ABIB (Nisan), which roughly corresponds to the English
month named April (Exodus 13:4). The names associated with
the other eleven months were added prior to, during, or after
the Babylonian captivity, They include Ziv (Iyyar), the second
month (I Kings 6:37); Sivan, the third (Esther 3:7); Tammuz,
the I fourth; Ab, the fifth; Elul, the sixth (Nehemiah 6:
15); Ethanim (Tishri), the seventh (I Kings 8:2); Bul (Heshvan)
the eighth (I Kings 6:38); Chislev, the ninth (Zechariah 7:
I ); Tebeth, the tenth (Esther 2: 16); Shebat, the eleventh
(Zechariah I :7); and Adar, the twelfth (Ezra 6: 15)
According to The World Book Encyclopedia, Vol.3, p29. "
In 46 BC, Julius Caesar issued a decree changing the Roman
Calendar from a lunar to a solar year." Caesar asked
the astronomer Sosigenes to review the calendar and suggest
ways for improving it. Acting on Sosigenes' suggestion, "Caesar
ordered the Romans to disregard the moon in calculating their
calendars". He divided the year into 12 months with every
fourth year to be called a Leap year. The Romans had become
Sun-Worshippers just as the ancient Babylonians and Egyptians
were before them. Time was reckoned based upon a solar year
beginning on January.
The Gregorian Calendar was designed to correct the errors
of the Julian Calendar. In 1582, acting on the advice of astronomers,
Pope Gregory XIII ordered 10 days dropped from the month October.
The day that would have been October 5, 1582 became October
15, 1582. The Roman Catholic nations of Europe adopted the
Gregorian Calendaral almost immediately. Various German states
kept the Julian Calendar until 1700. Great Britain did not
change to the Gregorian Calendar until 1752, Russia until
1918, and Turkey until 1927. Today it is used by most of the
civilized world.
In conclusion. the Hebrew Lunar Calendar is the one ordained
by the Creator for man's use. The sun, moon, and stars were
given as natural reminders of the times and seasons. .The
year begins in the Spring and lasts through Winter; the month
runs from New Moon to New Moon; the week is a period of seven
days; and the day starts at sunset and ends the following
sunset. We must forsake the ways of pagan Rome and begin using
Yahweh's biblical calendar system.
